London Wellness Group
Here at The London Wellness Group, one of the primary services we offer is that of a naturopathic clinic.
It’s a different type of medicine when compared with traditional western medicine, practiced by different people – naturopathic doctors, instead of medical doctors.
If you’ve never experienced naturopathic medicine before, you may have some questions about it.
Read on to find out more information about the topic below.
You can also feel free to contact us and book a FREE wellness solution session where you can get all your questions about naturopathic medicine answered.
What Is A Naturopathic Doctor?
A naturopathic doctor is someone who has completed the necessary schooling and is licensed by their local board.
In Ontario, naturopathic doctors are licensed by the College of Naturopaths of Ontario.
What’s the difference between a medical doctor vs. naturopathic doctor?
Doctors, both medical and naturopathic, have spent a great deal of time in school to perfect their craft and understanding of their respective fields of medicine.
But whereas a medical doctor attends medical school, a naturopathic doctor attends naturopathic school.
The main difference here is in the approach to medicine.
Medical doctors often rely on pharmaceuticals and invasive treatments, often in reaction to health problems.
Naturopathic doctors, on the other hand, rely on a more holistic approach.
This means addressing all aspects of your health, including diet, lifestyle, mental and emotional health, environment, and more, in order to give you a treatment plan uniquely tailored to your needs.
And because naturopathic doctors look at all angles, it’s generally a more proactive approach to health.
Can I see a naturopathic doctor and a medical doctor?
Yes, of course.
Certain aspects of health are outside of a naturopathic doctor’s specialty, including surgery and physical trauma.
For other aspects of health, most naturopathic doctors are open to working alongside your family doctor to provide you with the highest quality care.
If you are actively seeing a medical doctor, it’s important to let your naturopathic doctor know what sort of treatment you’re receiving so they can tailor your approach to work most effectively.
What sort of treatments do naturopathic doctors use?
The answer to this depends on the naturopathic doctor you’re working with and your specific health concerns.
But homeopathy, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), acupuncture, botanical medicine, nutritional and lifestyle counselling, and laboratory analysis are some of the most common tools in a naturopathic doctor’s tool belt.
Is naturopathic medicine based on science?
Naturopathic doctors detect illnesses and other health issues in the same way medical doctors do – through rigorous tissue analysis in the laboratory.
They may look at your blood, urine, stool, saliva, and/or hair.
There has also been a large amount of peer-reviewed research on the effectiveness of naturopathic treatments.
So yes, naturopathic medicine is scientific.
What’s the difference between a naturopath and a naturopathic doctor?
A naturopathic doctor has been to naturopathic school, and has received the necessary credentials and licensing to advertise themselves as such.
A naturopath, on the other hand, has had some other sort of training (or none at all), and is not necessarily qualified to act as a doctor.
Some naturopathic doctors may call themselves naturopaths, but others may not.
Only those with the proper credentials and licensing may call themselves naturopathic doctors, while anybody can call themselves a naturopath.
As a result, the quality of care you receive from naturopaths is inconsistent and unpredictable.
Here at The London Wellness Group, we employ only naturopathic doctors.
What types of illnesses can naturopathic doctors help with?
Naturopathic doctors focus on helping you achieve an optimum level of health, creating an environment where it’s difficult for illness to thrive.
This means naturopathic doctors can help with most illnesses.
Here at The London Wellness Group, our resident ND, Dr. Negin, specializes in pregnancy & paediatrics, anxiety, depression, gynaecological concerns, autoimmune disorders, and digestive issues.
Are naturopathic doctors covered by OHIP?
Unfortunately not. Most extended health benefits, though, offer full or partial coverage for treatments from naturopathic doctors.
For more information, speak to your employer, human resources manager, or insurance broker.
