We chiropractors often have a reputation for just being bone-crackers; for wrenching bodies around this way and that in order to bring things back into alignment.
And while cracking spinal manipulation does have something to do with it, it’s by no means the only aspect of chiropractic.
Now, all chiropractors are different, of course.
Each of us receives the same training in chiropractic college, but after that it’s up to us to grow our knowledge.
As the owner of a London Ontario chiropractic clinic, I’ve had the privilege of working with many different patients over the years, and this has given me unique insight into what works and what doesn’t.
One of the modalities I’ve incorporated into my practice is called electrotherapy.
And yes, I know it sounds terrifying.
You may be thinking of some sort of torture device that was best left back in the early 20th century.
This is often the reaction when I first mention electrotherapy. They really should have given it a different name.
But whatever you’re imagining right now, don’t worry. It’s a lot gentler than that.
In fact, many people find electrotherapy to be peaceful and relaxing.
Electrotherapy is a mode of treatment using electrical currents which flow through your muscles and stimulate them.
This helps to reduce pain, improve your circulation, strengthen your muscles and bones, and generally improve your overall physical condition.
How Does Electrotherapy Work?
If you’re receiving an electrotherapy treatment, here’s what you can expect.
I’ll take two electrode pads and attach them onto your skin.
They’re sticky, so they’ll stay in place, but not so sticky that you’ll end up with a permanent new pal. Think of it like a Post-It note for your skin.
Anyway, you’ll feel a mild electric current across your skin.
Most people describe it as very gentle, a tingling sensation similar to when your foot is asleep without the uncomfortable bits.
This can help relieve pain, but the way it does so is still not fully understood.
One of the leading theories is that it’s because the electrical stimulation blocks any pain signals from that area to your brain. But it does promote the creation and release of endorphins within your body, which are your body’s natural painkillers.
Electrotherapy Side Effects
Overall, electrotherapy is considered very safe.
But like most treatments, there are sometimes some side effects.
The most common one is a mild skin irritation or rash, which is more a result of the adhesive in the electrodes rather than the actual electrical treatment.
Overuse can sometimes cause a burning sensation as well, which is no problem when you’re receiving treatment from a qualified practitioner.
We also make sure to avoid stimulation over infections or wounds, since it can make them worse.
Pregnant women and people with pacemakers are also generally bad candidates for electrotherapy, but we determine things on a case-by-case basis.
What Does Electrotherapy Treat?
If you’re suffering from any of the following, you may benefit from electrotherapy:
• Chronic fatigue
• Chronic pain
• Nerve pain, especially caused by diabetes
• Fibromyalgia
• Headaches, especially migraines
• Weak or underdeveloped bones
• Anxiety
• Depression
