When you exercise, you put yourself at risk of injury.

This is as true for full contact sports like football or martial arts as it is for the most peaceful, benign sports like running or golf.

The injuries may be more traumatic in one than the other, but the risk is still there.

Because our bodies have so many different moving parts, there’s a lot that can go wrong.

This can lead to a variety of different repetitive strain injuries.

Some of the most common repetitive strain injuries include:
• Shin splints
• Plantar fasciitis
• Carpal tunnel symdrome
• Tennis elbow
• Sciatica
• Bursitis
• Shoulder strains
• Back pain
• Tension headaches.

If you’re experiencing any of the above injuries, you may be able to benefit from treatment with Active Release Therapy.

What is Active Release Therapy?

Active Release Therapy, or ART, is a treatment system designed by P. Michael Leahy, an American chiropractor and triathlete.

He developed this technique because he found traditional chiropractic wasn’t serving his patients as well as he’d like.

The goal of Active Release Therapy is to restore the mobility of your tissues which have been limited as a result of scar tissue formation, tears, strains, pulls, inflammation, and other problems as a result of overused muscles.

Each of the conditions listed above all have that in common – repetitive strain as a result of overused muscles.

These injuries are commonly considered sports injuries, but this isn’t the only cause.

Carpal tunnel syndrome, for example, is most closely associated with people who spend most of their time working on a computer.

Back pain and tension headaches can also be a result of a sedentary office life.

Regardless of the cause, though, Active Release Therapy is quite effective at dealing with these injuries.

What You Can Expect From Active Release Therapy Treatment

Here at The London Wellness Group, our in-house chiropractor Dr. Brad Abell is full-body certified in Active Release Therapy.

So you can expect to work with him, first off.

During an Active Release Therapy session, Dr. Brad will perform a combination of treatment and examination.

Because ART is not a one-size-fits-all approach, it requires a specific understanding of your body’s makeup and limitations.

He’ll examine your problem points to figure out your current limitations based on measuring the range of movement, tightness, and overall texture of your muscles, fascia, nerves, ligaments, and tendons.

Based on this analysis, Dr. Brad will ask you to make specific, guided movements as he applies tension to certain areas.
