Should You Work Through Lower Back Pain?

Lower back pain solutions | London Wellness Group | London Chiropractor

If you lead an active lifestyle, you'll eventually suffer from lower back pain.

Don't feel bad, it happens to almost everyone.

In most cases, the answer is to visit a chiropractor in your area.

A London Ontario chiropractor for lower back pain can help you here.

However, even after you have been adjusted you may have a question about the best way to work out.

Especially if your back starts to hurt.

You don't want to injure your lower back again.

Does that mean you shouldn't push yourself, though?

What’s the best course of action?

Read on and we'll help you find out.

Are You in Pain or Just Sore?

The very first thing to consider is whether you are in pain, or if you're merely feeling sore.

Soreness is your body's natural reaction to exercise.

It might not feel good, but it's not a bad thing.

Soreness is usually described as a dull, aching feeling.

Sore muscles may feel tender or stiff.

However, soreness only lasts 24 to 72 hours, and then you can get back to exercising.

Actual pain, on the other hand, is not a natural reaction to exercise.

It’s your body letting you know you’re doing something wrong.

Unlike soreness, pain is usually moderate or severe.

Pain is also likely to cause you to restrict your day-to-day activities.

As a general rule, if your lower back feels bad enough that you have to rearrange your daily schedule to accommodate it, you're in pain.

Should I Work Through the Pain or Not?

If you feel pain during or after an exercise, stop immediately and do not work through the pain.

As we mentioned previously, pain is your body letting you know you're doing something wrong.

Maybe the exercise you're doing isn't good for your lower back.

Maybe you're doing the exercise wrong.

Or maybe the pain is letting you know about another issue with your lower back you didn't know you had.

In any event, contact your chiropractor and set up an appointment.

If I Can't Exercise, Then What CAN I Do?

Not being able to work through lower back pain can be understandably frustrating.

However, there are a lot of different exercises available.

Your chiropractor can help you find an exercise which lets you work around your pain instead of trying to power through it.

Water therapy is one option.

Performing exercises in a pool is an excellent way to exercise your lower back and neck without stressing them.

Sometimes, your chiropractor may even suggest performing these exercises in a heated pool to increase your pain relief.

Low-impact aerobic exercises can also help you strengthen your lower back without causing pain.

For instance, if your lower back pain is caused by running, a therapist might suggest riding a bike or using the elliptical machine instead.

No matter what, you can rest assured that there’s a way for you to keep exercising without having to suffer.
