If you’re a skier, you probably know what you have to do to prepare for a skiing trip.
Pack your skis and boots.
Pack your ski jacket, hat and goggles.
Visit your chiropractor.
Surprised by that last one?
More and more skiers are discovering the benefits of chiropractics for everything from staying limber to back injury relief.
Read on to find out more about how chiropractic can help you better enjoy your skiing trip.
Tuning Up the Equipment
You don't want to go out skiing with equipment that hasn't been well-maintained.
Your skis, boots, pole or snowboard should all be functioning at their peak so you know that you can hit the slopes safely.
One piece of equipment always seems to get neglected, though—your body.
While most people know you should be exercising regularly for about six weeks before you start skiing, the idea that you should take your body into a chiropractor for a regular check-up gets overlooked much too often.
After all, if you’re like many people today, you probably spent a great deal of time sitting in a chair working.
This is an ideal lifestyle for some, better than the backbreaking manual labour jobs that can wreak havoc on your spine, but sitting can do just as much damage.
A study by the government of Victoria, Australia, found that a sedentary lifestyle can lead to muscular atrophy in the leg and gluteal muscles, shortening of your hip flexor muscles, and even spinal compression.
Any of these issues on its own will make it much more difficult to enjoy the slopes, but together they'll be a nightmare.
A chiropractor will examine your spine for subluxations, or misalignments, that may be interfering with your sense of balance and your coordination.
These subluxations and misalignments can also cause compressed or "pinched" nerves that can cause pain in your arms, legs, back and neck.
Chiropractic adjustments can eliminate these subluxations and have you in peak condition to hit the slopes.
In addition to chiropractic adjustments, chiropractors can also recommend stretches and exercises that can warm you up and make sure you have your full range of motion.
After the Skiing Trip
Even after the skiing trip, you'll still want to see your chiropractor.
They can provide support and care for any injuries that might have occurred during your skiing trip.
One of the most common injuries skiers suffer is a knee injury.
A nine-year study in the Western Journal of Medicine found that the most common injury for skiiers was to the knee, accounting for 35% of all injuries.
You might also come down with a case of "skier's thumb."
This is similar to tennis elbow, and it happens when you fall while clutching your poles.
Regardless of what you’ve injured, though, your chiropractor can help.
Letting your thumb heal on its own can lead to it becoming a chronic injury that is not only painful, but can also restrict its range of movement.
Finally, skiing may also result in a spinal injury.
While you may not suffer any breaks or strains if you wipe out, you may suffer a spinal misalignment.
If you get back from a ski trip and you have any pain in your arms, legs or back, contact your chiropractor.
