What is a chiropractor? And what is chiropractic medicine?

A chiropractor is someone who has completed the necessary schooling in chiropractic medicine, and who has been licensed to practice.

In Ontario, chiropractors are licensed by the College of Chiropractors of Ontario.

Chiropractic medicine is a specific discipline of medicine which focuses on treating musculoskeletal problems.

To a large degree, this includes relieving pain, but you don’t have to be in pain to benefit from chiropractic medicine.

Why should I see a chiropractor?

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms below, chiropractic medicine can help:

• Lower back pain
• Upper back pain
• Neck pain
• Hedaches
• Insomnia
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Difficulty focusing
• Disk herniations
• Sports injuries
• Plantar fasciitis
• Jaw tension
• Sciatica
• Scoliosis
• Muscle strains

A chiropractor can also help you prevent injuries or pain before they occur.

Where did chiropractic come from?

Chiropractic was developed by DD Palmer, a Canadian born in Pickering just east of Toronto.

His theory is based on the idea that musculoskeletal misalignment is the cause behind many diseases, and that most of the issues were in the spinal column.

He established the first chiropractic college, the Palmer School of Chiropractic, in 1897 in Davenport, Iowa, which still exists today.

Is chiropractic safe?

Because chiropractors don’t use drugs or surgery at all in their practice, there is zero risk of any adverse effects from that angle.

In general, chiropractic treatment is considered safe when administered by a licensed and qualified practitioner.

You may experience minimal discomfort in the area treated, which can show up in the form of headaches, fatigue, or general discomfort.

This is completely normal.

Although rare, there can be certain side effects, including a worsening of an existing disk herniation, nerve compression, and in rare cases, a vertebral artery dissection (a type of stroke) after a neck manipulation.

Also, if you have severe osteoporosis, cancer in your spine, numbness or tingling in your extremities, or are at risk of stroke, you may not want to pursue chiropractic care.

Your chiropractor will help you understand the risks and benefits before beginning your treatment.

Is chiropractic effective in treating sports injuries?

Yes, absolutely. As part of their education, chiropractors are trained to diagnose and assess sports injuries.

Dr. Brad himself is highly educated in this field.

He holds a master’s degree in kinesiology, the study of the mechanics of how the body moves.

He also has experience with sports medicine in several fields of athletics, including rowers and hockey players.

If you’ve experienced a sports injury, Dr. Brad can help you determine the cause of your pain and help you manage it, as well as help you mitigate the effects of your injury.

And if you’re an athlete who hasn’t yet experienced an injury, Dr. Brad can help you keep it that way.

What can I expect during my first visit?

When you first visit The London Wellness Group, Dr. Brad will take the time to get to know your health history, with a specific focus on any spinal issues you’ve experienced.

We may recommend x-rays in order to get a better idea of things.

During the actual adjustment, Dr. Brad will position your body in specific ways in order to adjust you and repair the subluxations in your body.

This may involve lying on your front, side, or back, or sitting upright.

You may experience minor discomfort, and hear popping or cracking sounds. This is normal.

If you experience any discomfort that becomes intolerable, let Dr. Brad know.

The idea is to make you feel better, not worse!

Is chiropractic covered by OHIP?

Not currently, no. However, chiropractic care is covered by just about every private health insurance provider out there.

Consult with your individual plan to find out more about whether chiropractic is covered for you, and how much.
